HIGHLIGHTS

  • September in Darfur was a month of planning, as key partner agencies participated in a round of workshops and planning sessions as a lead up to the Project Sheet submission for the 2008 UN Work Plan. In addition, teams in the field placed a strong emphasis on targeting needs prior to the winter season. Camp coordinators and distributing partners have started identifying needs in their areas of operation for replenishment of blankets, sleeping mats and other items where necessary. UNJLC logistics officers began analysis of previous distribution data to ensure that beneficiaries in all areas of Darfur can be reached before the cold season hits.
The past month saw a slow down in activity across the three Darfur states due primarily to security concerns. Insecurity in the region remains a challenge for UNJLC and partners, as access by road became increasingly limited. Tribal fighting and an increased number of car jackings in and around the three state capitals have also played a key role in limited access, causing some partners to temporarily suspended activities. The humanitarian community worked together to develop additional security measures so that life saving activities and services could be provided during Ramadan.
  • Despite limited access, UNJLC and partners dispatched 130,000 NFIs to 11,000 households during the month. In addition, teams participated in needs assessments in all three states. West Darfur colleagues were able to reach 350 households of newly displaced people in Kondobe, an area that is typically very difficult to reach. CARE warehouse teams were forced to suspend operations in Nyala town following a serious incident however the warehouse operations continued for receipts and emergency dispatches.
  • Fuel prices came back down to normal levels as 300+ tankers were released for dispatch in the three Darfur states. Prices hit a high of 20SDG per gallon for petrol and 16SDG for diesel in South Darfur and shortages slowed down many operations.
