Update on Juba Bridge
As reported on 7th November 2006, Juba Bridge partially collapsed on 6th November 2006, due to an overweight trailer crossing the bridge. The trailer and another truck hanging from the damaged portion of the bridge have been removed on 19th November 2006, after their cargo was offloaded the day before.
Reparation and partial re-construction of Juba Bridge is under way and one lane of the bridge is operational. There is no waiting time for inbound and/or outbound traffic.
According to the traffic police/guards at the East side of Juba Bridge, the maximum weight of trucks that can be permitted to cross this bridge is 5 metric tons.
There are no weigh-bridges in Juba area, hence the weight assessment of vehicles aiming to cross Juba Bridge is left to the judgement of traffic police/guards. Truck-loads considered too heavy will be re-loaded onto "Daffar" trucks at check-point approximately 200m East of Juba Bridge. ("Daffar's" are typically Mitsubishi Canter with total weight of 4.500 kg, like the small white westbound truck on photo "Juba bridge_one lane traffice_061204").
