Another successful example of the employment of partners within the activities of UN agencies has been the cooperation of UNJLC with the Technische Hilfswerk for the operation in Lebanon.

THW

The Technisches Hilfswerk (Federal Agency for Technical Relief), in 1953, became the major tool for relief intervention of the Federal Republic of Germany. In 50 years of increasing experience is considered to be one of the most modern relief organizations worldwide. The advantage of the organization is the fact of being 99% voluntary organization belonging to the German Ministry of Interior cooperating with UN agencies on behalf of the German Government.

As an internationally active mission organisation, the Federal Agency for Technical Relief is intensively involved in the global network of all relief organisations. As a competent partner, THW plays a key role, both in the global network of the United Nations as well in cooperations within the European Union.

THW is also specialized in support for any logistics aspect of operations and construction related issues. The collaboration with UNJLC started since 2003 and had seen several successes like the operations to support the victims of the South-east Asia Tsunami in 2004 and the Pakistan earthquake in 2005.

For the Lebanon crisis THW is collaborating with UNJLC for the implementation of the Joint Supply Tracker (JST) system, a new system created in collaboration with UNICEF to track all non food items movement during the operation. In the Lebanon crisis, UNJLC is collecting logistics data from all UN agencies so to have an overall picture of what is coming in and delivered in the country. THW deployed 2 experts in Syria and Cyprus to support UNJLC activities mainly by:

  • Participating to the logistic cluster meeting in Syria and Cyprus to coordinate all actors' logistics activities:
  • Collecting data for the JST system from al the actors involved in the relief operation, trough the use of the Cargo Movement Request form (CMR) for the incorporation of those data into the JST system.
