Latest monitoring Updates 17 October 2007

On 16th October the logistics team on the ground reported that:

Weather:

  1. Gulu: Rains reported in and around Gulu in last 24


Roads and Bridge:

  1. Water levels reported stable but still high at Komolo, Awojja and Aguu bridges
  2. Aguu Bridge is open to traffic despite the high water levels. Police still discourages heavily loaded trucks on/across the bridge
  3. It still is advisable for heavily loaded trucks to travel to Soroti via Lira town
  4. Murram and hardcore back filling and installation of additional culverts at Aguu bridge is in progress
  5. Barge operation plans to continue across Lake Bisina as main land link to Katakwi and Karamoja region
  6. Adjumani road is still closed and alternative route via Moyo is reported with heavily traffic leading to congested Lalopi ferry crossing point to Adjumani
  7. Lack  of access is reported  to Otuke and Omoro subcounties due to reported broken bridges on River Moroto


ON 16th October OCHA released a situation report. Main findings as follows:

  • The cluster, led by WFP, now has three MI-8 helicopters operational out of Soroti for the delivery of essential supplies throughout the flood-affected areas.
  • The user group continues to meet weekly in Soroti to determine the use of air assets, with agreed priorities remaining: 1) health supplies; 2) water and sanitation supplies; 3) food; 4) shelter and NFIs.
  • NFI storage space in the cluster’s facility in Soroti remains available.
