• On 29th June OCHA sent out a report on the situation in Somalia. Main findings as follows:

  1. Reports have been received of winged locusts in Somaliland and Puntland; particularly in Sanag and Bari regions in recent days. Technical experts in the FAO Locust Group at FAO HQ in Rome are working closely with the Desert Locust Control Organisations (DLCO) based in Dire Dawa (Ethiopia) and carefully monitoring the situation.
  2. The closure of the Kenya/Somali border continues to delay cross-border movement of relief supplies. Food belonging to WFP and CARE amounting to 8,500 metric tons and 25 metric tons of UNICEF UNIMIX supplementary food for malnourished children remain stuck at the Kenyan border unable to cross into Somalia. A convoy of 290 trucks was previously carrying the supplies, but due to the hold-up the supplies have now been unloaded into warehouses.
  3. Due to clan clashes in Kismayo, transporters are not currently using the main road between Kismayo and Jilib (Lower Juba).

• On 30th June Agence France press (AFP) reported that at least seven Somalis were killed on 29th in incidents between rival clans feuding over access to wells . The fighting broke out in Omad, near the southwestern Somalia town of Beledwein, the sources said.

• On 1st July Reuters reported that explosions and gunfire rocked Mogadishu on 1st July hours after President Abdullahi Yusuf promised to stem a bloody insurgency against his government and bring back stability to the country.

• On the same day Reuters also reported that Somalia's chaos will not end until thousands more troops are deployed in a much-delayed African peacekeeping force as said by the African Union said on 1st July. Opening a three-day AU summit, the bloc's top diplomat, Alpha Oumar Konare, also called for accelerated talks between Somalia's interim government and representatives of the country's complex clan network and other groups.
