Kenya - Latest updates - 12th December 06
- According to UNCEF reports on 1st December efforts have been intensified to reach displaced populations by air. Helicopters form the Government of Kenya, WFP and MSF have being used to airlift supplies. UNHCR has been assisted by the US air force to airdrops supplies in refugees camp. Priorities areas: Shantaabaq, Jara Julla and Dadaab divisions.
- OCHA reported on 8th December that the most affected areas include: North- Eastern Province, Western Kenya ( Budalangiarea) and the central highlands.
- Approximately 723, 000 people have been affected in different parts of the country and about 60,000 people have been displaced in the coastal, western and eastern provinces of Kenya. Out of the total number of affected, more than 315,000 propels are cut off as a result of destroyed roads and bridges. (Source: OCHA Situation Report)
Logistics Highlights
Roads: - Access remain extremely difficult, the transport system has been disrupted with roads and bridges washed away by the floods.
- According to Kenya Red Cross Society (KRCS) large areas in Mandera and Wajir Districts are impassable by road. On 7th December KRCS accessed Ijara District, which was previously cut off, with three 6x6 trucks
North Eastern Province, including Dadaab refugee camps- Most of the roads in Garissa remain impassable. Plans are in place to airlift food using military helicopters to areas such as Shanta-Habak division. The Garissa_Dadaab road, the main access road to the refugee camps, ia impassable due to heavy rains and the road have been washed away in 3 sections.
- According to KRCS the main roads from Garissa, Isiolo and Mandera have been cut-off and only 4x4 wheel vehicles can pass
- In Kilifi , the Ministry of Works has begun repairing damaged roads.
- In Lamu, the Kipini ara can be reached only by boats.
- Heavy rains also washed out sections of the main road trough Tana River district to North East Province. WFP has started food deliveries to Garsen trough Malindi.
Eastern/Central Province:- Heavy down pours in Meru have caused flooding in Isiolo, though water levels have reduced. The areas remain inaccessible due to the flooded roads.
- In Mwingi roads are under repair.
Western Province: - The road from Rwambwa to Maumau has been cut off at Makunda Secondary School.
- Musoma and Lugale refugee camps can only be accessed by boat.
Rift Valley Province:- Roads to Katarakwa have beacome impassable.
Airlift:- Displaced population have been reached by air. Two helicopters hired by WFP starting from 2nd December, have been used for airlift supplies. One military helicopter from the Government of Kenya is based in Garissa (north-eastern Province) and a second one will be used in Budalangi.
- Flights have been taken place form Wilson and JKIA airports. A number of aircraft have been used (a Buffalo, a Fokker, a 748 and a Dash -8) ( Source: Logistics cluster)
- UNHCR has been assisted by the US Air force to airdrop supplies in the Dadaab refugee camp.
- Booking procedures for UNCAS passenger services will be sent to the Log Cluster members and will be available on the www.logisticscluster.org web page. ( Source: Logistics cluster)
- It was stressed that agencies should customs clear their cargo prior to delivering it to the Swissport warehouse in JKIA airport. Swissport is the handling agent for the UNHAS operation. All delivered cargo should be clearly labelled with destination and consignee. ( Source: Logistic cluster)

- On Rhoka
village the Kenya Wildlife Service has been requested to assist with the wildlife boat , which has a capacity
of 10 passengers per trip.
