Logistics Highlights

To speed up airfreight UNICEF chartered an aircraft from MAF to airlift additional supplies to Baraki, Dadaab, Mandea and Wajir.

Main finding of the Joint assessment mission to Tana River and areas below Hola town:

An assessment mission (GoK, WFP, Kenya Red Cross and UNICEF) was undertaken on 8/9 December to flood affected areas below Hola town and Garsen on the Tana River. Main draft findings are as follows:
  • In the river zone (from Hola to Garsen): some villages are accessible by road and those that are not as they are close to the river they could be supplied by boat. All areas can be accessed by large helicopter and air drops may be possible.
  • In the delta zone (areas downstream of Garsen): it is highly likely that most villages have no road access.
  1. Some populations can be accessed by canoe but at levels that are unreasonable to cover the areas in need.
  2. If boats and crew were readily available, villages could be supplies by low draft boat.
  3. Not all areas could be accessed by large helicopters; supplies would need to be ferried by boat to outlying areas from a central location.
