Latest monitoring Updates 17th January 2008

  • On 14th January 2008 the logistics team on the ground reported that:
  1. The road between Caia and Sena is blocked and that 2 cars are already stuck - the block is caused at Tchetcha.
  2.  To go from Tete to Muturara, the available route is through Malawi. This road is at this point in time passable and INGC vehicle is travelling today and WV tomorrow.
  3. The Magoe district (west side of Tete province) is open since today. WFP vehicle is travelling on 15th to Magoe Sede.
  • On 16th January Deutsche Presse Agenteur reported that Zimbabwe's meteorological authorities delivered a warning Wednesday of new flooding to follow heavy rains in the north of the country anticipated in the next few days.
  • On 16th January IFRC reported that the MRC has contributed its own aquatic rescue teams, based at Mutarara and Mopeia, on the other side of the Zambezi from Caia, which has again become the hub of a major evacuation and relief effort.
  • The National Society has also deployed boats along the Buzi river, to the west of the port city of Beira. Despite a shortage of cash for fuel and outboards it has been able to move several hundred people
  • The all-important discharge rate at the Cahora Bassa dam has now been reduced to 5,500 cubic metres per second from 6,600.
