Latest monitoring Updates 14th January 2008
- On 11th January 2008 British Red Cross reported that Red Cross National Societies in six countries – Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Swaziland, Zambia and Zimbabwe – are bracing themselves for a flood emergency
- The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies is set to release £230,000 from its Disaster Relief Emergency Fund to support the affected countries.
- On 11th January UNCT release a situation report. Main issues as follows:
- The water level in the Zambezi river is expected to rise over the next days, while the Cahora Bassa dam (HCB) is still discharging at 6,600 cubic meters per second.
- In mid and lower Zambezi, the hydrometric levels are still rising due to the contributions from the main tributaries such as Chire, Luia and Luenha. While stable over the past days, the situation along the Búzi, Púngue, Save and Licungo basins, where the hydrometric levels are rising in the upper zone due to intense rains in the central region and in Zimbabwe, will also require close monitoring.
- The Humanitarian Country Team (HCT) is consolidating a proposal for the Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF), for submission to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in the coming days.
- The Logistics Cluster is convening regular meetings, and is presently preparing its component of the CERF proposal.
- Sectorial needs assessments (transport, storage and communications in Caia, Tete and Vilanculos) Logistics Cluster members have been requested to send their needs and requirements in order to develop the operational plan. Customs in Beira will be approached in order to get quick clearance of charters, NFI and others at Beira international airport.
