Latest monitoring Updates 27th February 2008
- On 26th February the United Nations Department of Public Information reported that Chad's Minister for Foreign Affairs had explained to the Security Council during an informal meeting the situation in his country, including the latest aggression against its capital, security issues, the disappearance of opposition leaders, the opening of a political dialogue and the normalization of relations with the Sudan.
- On 26th February the UNCT in Cameron reported that in response to the inflow of Chadian refugees into Cameroon's north-eastern town of Kousséri 5,523 persons have already been relocated to a newly equipped camp in the village of Maltam, while an estimated 10,000 more are expected to join them in the coming weeks.
- According to OCHA While the Chadian refugee emergency in Cameroon is now under control, the United Nations remains gravely concerned about the continued humanitarian crisis in eastern Chad.
- On 26th February Reuters reported that around 70 Austrian troops flew into Chad on Tuesday to join a European Union security force that is deploying in the Central African country's eastern borderlands to protect refugees fleeing violence.
- The Austrian contingent, which will eventually total up to 140 soldiers, is to be deployed in Abeche, the eastern Chadian town that serves as a hub for humanitarian operations by dozens of U.N. and other international relief agencies.
- As part of the EU force, whose total strength will be 3,700, French soldiers are already on the ground in N'Djamena and Abeche. A group of Irish Army Rangers arrived last week, following Swedish Special Forces troops the week before.
- In all, 14 EU nations are contributing, but more than half of the total will come from France, which has troops and planes in its former colony under a military cooperation treaty.
- On 26th February UNHCR reported that together with its partners have opened up a new site in the West Darfur region of Sudan to accommodate up to 6,000 internally displaced persons (IDPs).
- The newly-established camp, called Abu Zar II, is located 2 km from El Geneina, the capital city of West Darfur State. The first group of 143 IDP families (about 500 people) who were displaced from Armankul village following violence in the area two weeks ago, will arrive today (Wednesday).
- On 26th Ferbuary Reuters reported that French President Nicolas Sarkozy will stop over in Chad briefly today on his way to South Africa. Sarkozy will meet Chadian President Idriss Deby.
- On 26th February Agence France Presse (AFP) reported that almost 10,000 new refugees have poured into southern Chad from the Central African Republic (CAR) over the last four weeks,as reported by UNHCR.
- The European Union's long-awaited peacekeeping force for Chad and CAR is due to become operational next month, with its primary mandate to help protect an exodus of hundreds of thousands of refugees from strife-torn Darfur, as well as the CAR displaced and internally displaced Chadians
