Latest monitoring Updates 11th February 2008
- On 8th February the United Nations News Services reported that UN agencies and their partners are rushing emergency food, medicine and other relief items to assist some 30,000 people who have fled Chad to seek refuge in Cameroon.
- The UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) estimates 20,000 to 30,000 Chadians streamed over the Chari River to Kousseri. The agency has started an emergency airlift to bring aid to the refugees in Cameroon. UNHCR-chartered Ilyushin-76 cargo plane was expected to land Sunday in Garoua, 800 km north of Yaoundé, Cameroon, with 45 tonnes of relief items – the first of two flights this week that will deliver aid supplies for 14,000 people. The cargo includes plastic sheeting, blankets, jerry cans and cooking sets which will be transported by truck to Kousseri.
- On 8th February OCHA reported that the United Nations Humanitarian Air Service (UNHAS) has launched operations in response to the emergency. As of 07 February, a total of three flights had been organised between Cameroon's capital Yaoundé, Garoua, and Maroua, transporting a total of 37 humanitarian workers as well as some emergency supplies.
- On 9th February OCHA reported that refugees still estimated to be at least 30,000. Official registration to start during movement to Maltam.
- Four NGOs currently in Kousséri, in addition to United Nations and Red Cross movement; the non-governmental organizations Cooperazione Internazionale (COOPI), International Rescue Committee (IRC), Médecins Sans Frontières – France (MSF-F), and Médecins Sans Frontières – Spain (MSF-E).
- Presence of UXO in Kousséri a concern. United Nations deploys a mine action expert to the area.
- The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) is equipping a camp in Maltam, 32 km from Kousséri, to host the refugees. The camp can host up to 100,000 people. Official registration will start at the time when refugees are provided transportation to the camp.
- On 10th February Reuters reported that Chad's rebels said on Sunday they had occupied an eastern town after clashes with the army and mercenaries from neighbouring Sudan and said they were still in control of the centre of the landlocked country.
- Ali Ordjo Hemchi, a spokesman for the coalition of three rebel groups which launched a failed assault on N'Djamena a week ago, said the rebels had taken the town of Am Timan, some 600 km (373 miles) east of the capital, after a brief battle.
- The authorities have relaxed a dusk-to-dawn curfew imposed on the capital on Thursday so that it now runs from midnight to 6:00 in the morning.
