Document Actions
  • On 7th February the UNCT reported that at least 30,000 persons have fled fighting in Chad to seek refuge in neighbouring Cameroon. The United Nations and partners are preparing to respond to an influx of up to 50,000 people.
  • They also reported that most refugees are believed to come from Chad's capital N'Djamena.
  • The refugees are now located in Cameroon's remote north-eastern town of Kousséri, over 1,500 kms from the capital Yaoundé. The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) plans to move the refugees as soon as possible to a better campsite near the town of Maltam, 32 kms from Kousséri. The camp was used by UNHCR in the past, and could host up to 100,000 people.
  • On 7th February the government of France declared that France is to provide emergency humanitarian aid to people affected by the crisis in support of international organizations and NGOs working in the region. Two aircraft have been chartered to fly humanitarian supplies.
  • One aircraft will leave on 7th February, with 40 metric tons of supplies (including tents, generators, water purification equipment) and medicines. A second flight will leave on Saturday, February 9, with 40 tons of humanitarian supplies (for the NGOs and French Red Cross).
  • On 7th February 2008 Reuters reported that Chad's government slapped a dusk-to-dawn curfew on the capital N'Djamena and the centre and east of the country on Thursday, as it sought to tighten security after a rebel assault at the weekend
