Customs Project
The Customs Support Project is aimed at speeding up the customs clearance of critical emergency response commodities, with special emphasis on non-food items. This will be achieved by:
- Promoting an Information-Sharing attitude
- Improving customs knowledge and awareness
- Studying and benchmarking JLC member agencies’ supply chain with special attention to the customs-related critical parts (for identified non-food items such as telecomm and vehicles)
Outputs:
- Customs Information Guide (CIG): a country-by-country content management system (built on PLONE technology), containing both legal and hands-on information for logistics officers across the entire spectrum of humanitarian relief
- UN and humanitarian agencies’ customs process revision: bench marking exercise
- Customs awareness training
- Facilitation in Emergencies (in collaboration with the LSU Unit of OCHA)
Background:
The project was conceived as an initiative to strengthen the UNJLC’s capacities at central level in the specific field of customs.
This was largely done by investing in an IT tool to support the customs-related aspect of the humanitarian supply chain, and by revising the link between humanitarian aid and customs.
Currently, the UNJLC Customs Team is composed of two staff: a TNT secondee (with direct operational reporting lines to the UNJLC Chief), and a UNJLC logistician, both specialized in the field of customs.
