- According to local media the Indonesian police stated that: Mr. Syech Marhaban, a Muslim cleric who represents the United Development Party in the regional parliamentary assembly, was seized on Monday by guerrillas from the Free Aceh Movement (GAM) (police Chief Commissioner Arsyad). Marhaban is deputy head of the council for the Nagan Raya district of western Aceh. A ransom demand was refused.
CRITICAL ISSUES
Nothing significant to report
GENERAL
- UNJLC has collected data from the Governor's Office on construction material prices post-tsunami in different areas of Aceh. The data was translated into English and will shortly be post on the UNJLC website. The data is also available on CD at UNJLC Banda Aceh or the HIC kiosk.
- UNJLC has acquired procedure information for importing radio and on permission for radio frequency. The details will soon be available on the UNJLC website.
- British Red Cross (BRC) has obtained timber procurement information via the Australian Trade Minister. Interested parties should see Frazer Murray at BRC office Jl Fatahillah 29 Geuceu Inem - Banda Aceh.
- Clearly illustrating the logistical challenges of the reconstruction phase, the IOM's Post-Disaster Damage Assessment in Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam, reveals that more than 600 square kilometres of settlements and 66,000 homes were swept away by the tsunami. Among the findings surrounding 2,496 tsunami-affected towns and villages in 154 sub-districts contained in the Executive Summary:
- more than one-third of the 173,000 hectares of settlements hit by the tsunami were completely destroyed;
- 116,880 private dwellings were damaged or destroyed;
- 460 health facilities, 665 school buildings destroyed;
- 1,110 religious buildings destroyed;
- up to 1,000 government offices were destroyed;
- more than 1,525 kilometers of road were either completely or partially destroyed (this is the equivalent of a road between London and Rome, or New York City and Chicago);
- Over 1,880 bridges were washed away.
MILITARY AND BILATERAL SUPPORT
Nothing significant to report.
LAND
- UNJLC's plans to make an assessment trip along the Banda Aceh-Meulaboh road have been delayed by poor weather and reports of road erosion in the vicinity of Lamno (CARDI).
- Air Serv is selling its 4-wheeler all terrain vehicles (dune buggies): 2 x Yellow 400 CC, 2 x Red 350 CC 4x4. The price is US$5000.00 each. If interested please call Air Serv International, Ms. Mira Kassis at 0062 815 33 747 761 or e-mail at mkassis@airserv.org.
- The 15 containers of bridge components from DFID have been safely transferred from Belawan Port to a warehouse in Medan.
- De-stuffing was completed on 15 June.
- Ownership and custody of the bridging was formally transferred in a small ceremony in Banda Aceh on 14 June attended by Gareth Thomas, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State DFID, Dr Kuntoro Mangkusubroto, and Head of the Agency for the Rehabilitation and Reconstruction of Aceh and Nias, Mohamed Saleheen, Representative and Head of Country Office WFP, and the British Ambassador.
- The Japan International Cooperation System (JICS) has started procurement and tender processes for reconstruction of the115 km Meulaboh-Calang road:
- Included is 30 km of existing road, 25 km of new road/route built earlier by the TNI, and 60 kilometers of local district road;
- It will be fully operational in February 2006;
- Road construction will be financed with $32 million taken from a $62 million Japanese government grant. The remaining grant funds will be used to finance a clean water project in Aceh.
- The TNI, in charge of building and maintaining the west coast route since the tsunami, will complete their mission at the end of June 2005.
- Continued rains in the past few days have made the Banda Aceh-Meulaboh route less accessible by car and truck in several locations. Reuter's staff returning from Meulaboh report that the worst sections are between Lho Kruet and Lamno with occurrences of bogs, landslides, fallen trees and flooded bits. A 30 km. journey took 7 hours.
- Lamno-Calang: There exist large muddy sections approximately one hour south of Lamno with many trapped vehicles. Caution is advised. There are many flooded and muddy sections further south, all passable with 4 wheel drive vehicles and good driving. North of Rigah (approx. 20 Km north of Calang) the road is cut by water and one section is impassable to vehicles (staffs were forced to use a small raft to get across). The road is fine from this point to Calang. (CARDII)
- NGOs anticipating large shipments by truck should notify IOM in advance in order to allow the organization to plan for truck numbers required and ensure available transport.
SEA

- On 19 June 2005 due to rough seas WFP LCT Reulina did not reach Calang and was forced to return to Malahayati Port.
- After several unsuccessful attempts to ''release'' LCT Sukses 3 in Lamno, on 19 June 2005 the heavy storms set the LCT afloat again. The LCT had been grounded off the coast from Lamno since 11 May 2005.
