Indian-Ocean: SRI LANKA - Transitional accomodations completed

15,468 transitional accommodations completed

The number of temporary accommodation units constructed to relocate tsunami-affected families now staying in welfare centers in the eight districts totaled 15,468 on 15 April according to the statistics gathered by the head office of the Transitional Accommodation Project (TAP). Thus the project has achieved a progress of roughly 50 percent of the targeted 30,000 temporary accommodation units scheduled to be completed by the end of May. Work on 7,856 additional units is now in progress and is to be completed by the end of May meaning that by that time 75 percent will have been completed. According to the Director of TAP some problems have been encountered in finding lands to construct these accommodations but a solution had now been found in many districts. According to statistics gathered by TAP the number of transitional accommodation units completed in the respective districts are as follows:

  • Colombo          798
  • Kalutara           628
  • Galle                1968
  • Matara             1076
  • Hambantota     1229
  • Ampara            5442
  • Batticaloa         2892
  • Trincomalee      1436

Each transitional accommodation unit should have two rooms with a minimum floor area of 200 square feet. The cost of each unit should not exceed Rs.40,000.
