Travel of UN Staff Occasionally Restricted due Tensions in North and East Sri Lanka
Occasional recent tensions between rival Shinalese and Tamil groups in the northern and eastern parts of Sri Lanka may temporarily restrict travels of UN staff in the area. On Thursday a temporary curfew was enforced in Trincomalee district following police measures to halt Janatha Vimukthi Peramunaa (JVP) attempts to build temporary houses for tsunami victims in the town of Trincomalee. Tamil groups protested intensely in the aftermath by blocking many roads near the planned building site.
A paramilitary cadre was shot and seriously wounded in Batticaloa town Saturday morning around 9.10. He was shot near the ICRC office in the eastern town.
