Iraq: Cargo Volume Via Aqaba and Umm Qasr Surges in January
The TEUs for full import containers handled in the port of Aqaba in January 2004 surged to 2598 from 1346 in December. The TEUs in Umm Qasr also witnessed a rise from 2597 in December to 2682 in January. This increase in cargo traffic through Umm Qasr is remarkable in light of delays caused by a strike and tense relationship between port workers and authorities on the one hand and a stoppage due to heavy rainfalls on the other hand.
These figures confirm that commercial activity in Iraq is picking up while the OFF traffic is at its peak.
The figures were collected from the port authorities in Aqaba and Umm Qasr respectively.
