Iraq: More containers via Umm Qasr than Aqaba in the final months of 2003

According to statistics from SSA Marine at the Iraqi port of Umm Qasr, 3153 gross tons of cargo was handled at the port in the month of December 2003 compared to 2101 gross tons in November (see table below). This constitutes a roughly 50 percent monthly increase in volumes. The TEU’s for full import containers in Umm Qasr amounted to 1881 in November while they rose to almost 2600 in December. The aggregate TEU’s for both months were 4478. In comparison, the total number of TEU’s in transit (to Iraq) through the port of Aqaba during the same period was 2779 (according to data from Port Corporation Aqaba).
