On 15th September UNJLC met with the Rufus Allen Green, Deputy Minister for Technical Services at the Ministry of Rural Development (MRD). The MRD has, under Liberian law, the mandate for overseeing construction of all farm-to-market, feeder, and secondary roads. Primary and trunk roads come under the auspices of the Ministry of Public Works. Mr Green provided UNJLC with records of all road projects executed by the Ministry between its establishment in 1981 and 1998 when its last road projects were carried out. UNJLC and MRD will co-ordinate to incorporate this information into that provided by NGOs and UN Agencies. MRD Contacts:
The European Union (EU) is in the process of procuring vital spare parts for the Monrovia Electricity Plant. WFP provided diesel is currently being used to operate both the Electricity Plant and Water Pumping Station. Access to the Water Pumping Station is currently problematic due to a washed out road. ECOMIL and the EU are working together to lay a US Bailey Bridge along the route, and it is estimated that it will take three to four days further to position the bridge and prepare it for heavy traffic
