Conclusion

  • Notwithstanding the drivers' experience, the suitability of the vehicles in which they are traveling and the presence of the Pakistan Military Engineers, UN staff are not permitted to travel this road
  • The road is precarious at times, with several corners requiring three point turns.
  • It is also steep with loose gravel at many points and very rough surfaces.
  • UN vehicles are unsuitable for this road as they are too large to negotiate the conditions.
  • The road took 11 days to clear by PAKMIL after a series of landfalls following the 8 November Earthquake.
  • During the road assessment PAKMIL observed that some of these landfalls are still active. Rain and/or tremors could further destabilise the road at any time.
