Mozambique-Latest Updates 13th February 2007

•    On 12th February IRIN reported that Mozambique has been hit by the worst floods in six years , with an estimated 29 people killed and 60,000 evacuated from the central Zambezi basin to higher ground , according to governments disaster response agency.

•    Officials expect the flooding to worsen in the coming week, as heavy rains has been falling in the areas that feed the Zambezi River. Recent heavy rains also threaten to flood large areas in the north of the country.

•    On 12th February the UN News Service also reported that United Nations humanitarian officials are warning that the situation inside Mozambique, which has been devastated by severe flooding in recent weeks, is likely to only worsen in the days ahead. As reported by UN News Service, WFP has begun distributing 300 tons of food rations to 2,000 survivors who have gathered in Mutara, one of the hardest hit areas, while UNICEF has sent its first shipment of relief supplies to Caia, in Sofala province.
