1. SECURITY
- Over 5,000 UNIFIL troops are now on the ground as part of the designated 15,000 troops committed under the ceasefire resolution. The current forces in south Lebanon are Italian (Maaraka), Spanish (Markaba) and French (Bent Jbeil). The Ghanaian battalion is in the process of moving from Tibnin to Chahin, its place in Tibnin will then be assumed by Belgian engineers and medics. The Indian battalion remains in Eib el Saqi and the Chinese engineers in Hanniyieh.
- The second phase of UNIFIL deployment may be delayed by up to a month due to problems of logistics and capacity.
- Six ships, including Italian, French, Greek and British vessels, are currently patrolling Lebanese waters as part of the interim Maritime Force. A German vessel is due to arrive in early October.
- The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) still maintain 10 border positions in the south.
- As of 28 September, the number of UXO victims since the 14 August ceasefire is now 124. This total includes 12 civilians killed, 98 civilians injured, and 14 demining accidents. At least 95% of these incidents were caused by cluster bombs.
- UNMAS continues to estimate that it will take until December 2007 to clear all the UXO from contaminated areas.
- The United Arab Emirates has promised 20 million USD, of which 6 million will be devoted to cluster bomb clearance. Another 14.5 million will go towards completing the long-term clearance of previously contaminated sites.
2. SEA
- The M/V Mex arrived at 0800 on 29/09/06 carrying 3,518 MT of wheat flour for WFP. This is expected to be the last shipment of WFP food arriving in country.

- The Logistics Cluster in Tyre is expecting to close by the end of next week. At this point, WFP infrastructure in the form of mobile storage tents and prefab containers will be handed over to UNMACC.
- WFP expects to wrap up all food aid by the second or third week of October and to be fully withdrawn by 24 October for the end of the emergency phase.
- OCHA will be pulling out of Tyre at the end of this week. The Rest House will remain open until 24 October for all humanitarian partners requiring work space.
- HIC will retain one GIS officer in Tyre and one in Beirut until the end of the emergency phase. The rest of the HIC team will be withdrawing in line with OCHA.
