Report of Damages/Repairs for Beirut International Airport 20/09/2006

This document describes the damages inflicted to Beirut International Airport and gives a general overview of the repair work conducted after the ceasefire agreement.

Beirut's Rafic Hariri International Airport is Lebanon's only international air facility and a key link between Lebanon and the outside world.
The airport is located in the Khaldeh suburb south of the capital, about 8km from downtown Beirut.

Beirut International Airport suffered significant bomb damage during the recent conflict.

  • The airport's runways (3) and taxiways were targeted and damaged at strategic points.
  • Of these three runways, two were repaired within the first month and are now operational (17/35 and the new 03/2).
  • The third runway (16/34, 3,395m) is currently under repair and remains inoperative, since only a 1395 meter length remains available for landing and takeoff.
  • The old runway 03/21 formerly used as a taxiway could be made available for use if required, however capacity is currently considered sufficient.
  • There was serious damage to certain tunnels running underneath the runways, these are now under repair.
  • Nearby fuel facilities were also destroyed, meaning all aircraft are now refueled with the use of bowsers. The time it will take to repair the airport's tankers is estimated at one year.

The airport is now once again at full operational capacity and is currently operating 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
However, supplies of Jet A1 remain limited.
