Fuel Distribution
The recent security situation in Monrovia led to a shortage of fuel availability in the city, with all fuel stations remaining closed until the resumption of stability. As a result, and on the request of the Resident Co-ordinator, UNJLC co-ordinated the distribution of diesel fuel from the WFP leased ship Sea Bulk Marlin 1 to humanitarian organisations in Monrovia as a bridging operation until the reactivation of normal commercial supplies. As such, operations were carried out between 17th and 24th August 2003 in which time a total of 350,000 litres of diesel was distributed to the humanitarian community and Monrovian public services
| A diesel tanker was hired by UNJLC and distributed fuel to UN Agencies, IOs, and NGOs at Monrovia port between the hours of 9 to 5. Deliveries were also made to replenish Agency fuel storage tanks. |
In addition to supplying the humanitarian community, UNJLC, on the request of the Special Representative of the Secretary General, organised the delivery of WFP fuel to the Liberian Water Supply Company and the Liberian Electrical Company in Monrovia in order to facilitate the reactivation of both power and clean water supplies within the city.
This critical bridging operation enabled the resumption of full activities in Monrovia by humanitarian players thereby avoiding a week’s delay while the commercial sector reactivated.
Below is a list of all Agencies, IOs, NGOs, and public services that received WFP fuel during the UNJLC operation:
