LBR - Roberts International Airport - Description
Roberts International Airport
(RIA) is Liberia’s main international airport. RIA is located approximately thirty-five (35) miles from the capital of Monrovia. The runway of the airport is about 11000 feet long. The airport was built by the United States military during the Second World War (WWII) as a logistics base. Following the end of the war, the airport was then transformed into a commercial entity for international carriers. |

The Roberts FIR (Flight Information Region) TMA (Terminal Control Area) extends 40NM north of Conakry and 99NM south of Monrovia. The Roberts FIR is a dismemberment of the Dakar FIR. The Dakar FIR was regionally established in January 1975 by Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone, who decided to manage their airspace jointly. The FIR was named after Roberts International Airport (also known as Robertsfield), which hosted the headquarters at its creation. The headquarters was transferred to Freetown in June 1990 because of the war in Liberia. It has been based in Conakry since June 1997 as a result of the war in Sierra Leone. |

Storage
|
The RIA Cargo Department has two storage facilities: in-bound and out-bound storage. These have a storage timeframe of 10 days free of charge. Following the ten-day period, a charge of US 10 cent is levied for each succeeding day. The Cargo Storage Report form must be submitted if the cargo in store exceeds 10 days. The normal charge for cargo at the airport is US 10 cents per kilo; but for UN Agencies and humanitarian organizations, the cost is halved (ie. 5 cents). Additionally, the airport requires a 15-hour notice for importation of goods for preparatory reasons.
There is one hangar at the airport. It is 80x50m2 and is currently being used by UNMIL. |
 |
Fuel
Jet fuel is supplied by Exxon Mobil Incorporated. The fuelling of the aircraft is arranged prior to the arrival of the flight. It is an agreement between the airline and the supplier (Mobil).
There are currently 2 fuel storage facilities. One of these was built by the United States Military in the 1980’s but has not been in use. The other is currently being used by Mobil Inc.
