General Info:

The Silopi/Habur EP is located in the South East of Turkey and is the official UNSCR 986 EP. It is located between Silopi in the Turkish border province of Sirnak and Zakho in Northern Iraq. The capacity of the gate is in excess of three thousand vehicles per day, although not currently operating at that capacity.

The gate itself is large, fully enclosed, secure, egg shaped compound, sitting immediately alongside the River Hecil, a tributary of the River Tigris, which is the border between Turkey and Iraq. As a rough estimation the fully enclosed compound is about two square km in size. There is a 15 km two-lane highway leading to and from the gate at Silopi. Access to the secure customs compound is by a three-lane entrance from the highway which is controlled by the Customs Police. The same set-up applies to traffic leaving the compound and entering into Turkey. On the Iraqi side of the border there are two bridges that cross the Hecil into Iraq. The western bridge takes traffic into Iraq and the eastern bridge brings traffic into Turkey.
