SYRIA SEA ENTRY POINTS

General

Syria has three major ports namely Tartous, Banias and Lattakia.

Tartous is the largest, accounting for approximately 50% of total tonnage, and mainly handles bulk cargo shipments. Banias is dedicated to oil exports. Lattakia, the most northern of the three ports, is currently the most popular for container shipments.

All Syrian ports have a common management structure. The ports authorities are maritime public sector organizations under the umbrella of the Ministry of Transport. The ports authorities are responsible for all aspects of port operation and cargo handling, including on-site storage and liaison with other Government of Syria ministries involved in the transport of commodities from the port to inland destinations. They maintain a monopoly on stevedoring and other discharging services; however, there are moves to privatize these functions. The ports authorities employ security elements of all port facilities, pilotage on a 24/7 basis, fire fighting (modernization of this function is underway and some equipment has already been received) and medical coverage. Each port has integral back-up power.
