General
Iran has four major ports on the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormoz. These are, from east to west: Bandar Abbas, Bandar-e Busher, Bandar Iman Khomeyni and Khorramshar.
The main port on the Caspian Sea is Bandar-e Azali.
Bandar Abbas also known as Shahid Rajahee is newly built. It has modern and sophisticated cargo and container handling equipment, and it is specially equipped for container handling.
Bandar-e Busher has less facilities and services than Bandar Abbas, and Bandar Khomeyni and is therefore less used. .
Bandar Iman Khomeyni is the main and most suitable port in the western region for operations having a highly developed railway and road infrastructure which links the port with the interior of the country. The port uses modern port equipment to handle containers, bulk and general cargo. In addition it has specialized terminals for the handling of construction materials, oil liquids and industrial powder. The port is also equipped for the handling of bulk cargo such as minerals, petrol liquid or grains.
Khorramshar is more a river port, situated on the river Arvand Roud (Dija), and has limited access due to the water depth. The main activity of this port is general cargo handling.
Bandar e Azali is located on the Caspian Sea. The main activity of this port is general cargo handling.
All Iranian ports are modern and equipped with suitable handling equipment.
